I'm linking to Snarkcake's wonderful X-Files finale drinking game. I'm planning on Tivoing the episode, because if I know anything about Chris Carter after eight seasons, it's that I'm going to have several instances of "What the fuck???" in the middle of the episode. There had BEST be Krycek. That's all.

We've been in PA for a birthday party all day.
We just got home, and I raced in to turn on the television. Why, you ask?
Ultimate Manilow is on.
I know. Believe me, I know.

I'm having a severe case of puppy envy.
Growing up, I always had a dog. My parents had a St. Bernard when I was born, and then I received Samson, my sweet Old English Sheepdog, as an Easter present when I was four. Sammy died of cancer when I was sixteen, and since then, my parents have only had cats.
When we moved into our house, we noticed that the people in the purple house across the street have a big, fluffy...Old English Sheepdog. Although he's more grey than Sammy was, seeing him reminds me of what a great pet, friend and companion he was.
Then, we got tenants.
Our tenants are a very nice young couple, who happen to have two puppies. I was really none too thrilled about having puppies living right next door for a variety of reasons (barking, peeing, the whole nine yards) but after some discussion with Dave and with the owners, we have a pretty high comfort level that it's all going to work out very well. I haven't heard a peep out of the dogs since they moved in over the weekend, and frankly, they're so freaking cute that I don't think I could be mad at them anyway. It's funny; I'm more in love with the Shiba (he's the black and tan variety) because he looks like a little tiny German Shepherd (my paternal grandmother had a German Shepherd, Greta, who was the gentlest dog I've ever known), while Dave loves the Jack Russell, mostly, I think, because he grew up with a wirehaired fox terrier.
Anyway, it would be completely ridiculous for us to get a dog right now. And the cats would hate it. But that doesn't stop me from wanting one. Badly.

My emu oil has arrived, courtesy of GD&K Emu Farms in Blackfoot, Idaho. Catherine, I really hope this stuff works!

My sweet fiance just left to go see Attack of the Clones, wearing his old Star Wars "Han Solo encased in carbon" tee shirt. He's so adorable.

This article discusses the Washington, DC rule that babies born in wedlock can only bear their father's surname. This just seems dumb, dumb, dumb.

"We feel that a person who is homosexually oriented is not a suitable candidate for the priesthood, even if he did not commit an act [of gay sex]. There is a difference between heterosexual candidates and homosexual candidates. A heterosexual is taking on a good thing, becoming a priest, and giving up a very good thing, the desire to have a family. [A gay seminarian], by his orientation, is not giving up family and marriage. He is giving up what the church considers an abomination." -- Philadelphia Catholic Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua, announcing that gays are banned from the priesthood in his diocese, as quoted by the Philadelphia Inquirer, April 27.
Yeah. Because being gay means that you don't have or aren't interesting in being part of a family.
I grew up Catholic with a semi-interested father and a mother who became SuperCatholic after converting from Presbyterianism to marry him. I went to twelve years of Catholic school. Since then, I have been what you'd call "lapsed," and this has been no small source of consternation for Dave's family, especially his mother.
If I weren't lapsed before this scandal broke, I most certainly would be now. Every story, every quote, every soundbite makes it worse and worse. Blame the gays. Blame the victims. Blame anyone but the hierarchy that knew, acknowledged, hid and perpetuated the abuse. It's disgusting.

The last few days have been a little busy, and wacky. Wackier than usual, perhaps. Monday, we had the monsoon, and I ended up going to bed really early. Yesterday was a sea of conference calls, meetings, and other assorted business kerfuffles, and then I camped out on the couch to watch Willow go all super-Goth on Warren's ass. Oh, and I picked up most of my wardrobe from the dry cleaners.
Today and tomorrow, Le Boss is out of town, which virtually ensures that chaos will erupt. I got in this morning and cranked out a few agreements that just needed a few minutes of uninterrupted editing time, and then...yup, you guessed it. Chaos. I don't want to get into details, lest my head actually explode, but as usual, it involves a last-minute request for approval of material that we don't even have. Joy! Bliss! Puppies!
At least I didn't have pinkeye after all.

There's got to be a special place in hell for people who do these things to children.

I read about Fox auctioning off this necklace, which is apparently worn by Calista Flockhart in the last episode ever of Ally McBeal, and I have to say that I think the whole thing is in extremely poor taste. Although the proceeds from the auction will allegedly go to charity (check out the spelling errors in this sentence in the listing: "100% of the net proceeds will aid thousands of children who's educations were affected when their schools became inaccessable due to the 9/11 attacks."), I can't imagine ever wearing a necklace that is supposed to look like the wall remaining at the bottom of the World Trade Center after the attacks. Maybe it's just the thrill of owning something worn by itty-bitty Calista. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

At least it stopped raining. I've got meetings scheduled back to back to back this morning, and then I have a bunch of errands to do which were put off last evening because of my lack of desire to get out of the car in the monsoon.

I don't really have anything to say about Verisign, so I won't mention Verisign; if you have anything to say about Verisign, though, please feel free to talk about Verisign.
