I just got home from a baby shower for a coworker in the hinterlands west of here. It's a gorgeous day, and it was a lovely event. The food was terrific, the company was great, and it didn't go on too long. On my way home, I saw one of those things that only happens in Montclair: a fender-bender involving two Mercedes and a Bentley.

Former Devils head coach John Cunniff died of cancer yesterday. He was 57. Cunniff was head coach of the Devils from 1989-1991, and also coached their affiliate in Albany. New coach Kevin Constantine had named him as an assistant this past January, but he had to step down because of his illness. He is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.

Interesting article about the continuing investigation into the disappearance of Rilya Wilson. Her caretaker (who claims to be her grandmother) has now failed a polygraph test about the disappearance, and the caretaker's sister claims that the woman suffers from dementia caused by a car accident. That car accident: the sister RAN OVER the caretaker with a rental van. And then the caretaker sued Alamo Rent-A-Car. Because I'm sure that the rental car agency caused the sister to run over her. Jesus Christ, what is wrong with people?

Remember a couple of weeks back when I was musing about how those new Big Game winners could have run up $202,000 in credit card debt before filing for bankruptcy? Here's how.

The continuing evolution of the Shannon Schieber murder investigation is truly fascinating to me. It's appalling to see how incredibly the Philadelphia PD bungled both the initial call to her apartment and the subsequent investigation into both her death and the series of rapes that have now all ended up tied to one man -- a man whom Philadelphia police had in custody on several occasions, but released. While I understand that the PD felt that they didn't have enough evidence to hold the guy, shouldn't someone, somewhere have thought to cross-reference all of these incidents? Couldn't they have tried harder to link him to places, people, physical evidence? It's very disheartening.

The governor of Maryland has declared a moratorium on executions until a study examining the state's system of capital punishment for evidence of racial bias is complete. Maryland and Illinois have now both halted executions in order to examine the fairness with which the death penalty is applied.
Ah, Furman. The phoenix may rise yet from the ashes.

Former Devils head coach Larry Robinson was apparently going to meet with Glen Sather, manager of the evil New York Rangers, about a head coaching position there. However, Larry has removed his name from contention, saying that "his head and his heart aren't in hockey right now." Robinson was fired by Devils owner Lou Lamoriello in late January, only to return as an assistant to new coach Kevin Constantine after John Cunniff fell ill.
Rumors abound about who might coach where -- Ken Hitchcock may go to the Flyers, and Herb Brooks to the Rangers. Brooks is interested in Robinson as a defensive coach if he does indeed take the Rangers job.

The Bush administration has announced plans to "reinterpret the nation's education law" to encourage the creation of single-sex public schools. While I attended a single-sex private high school and thrived in that environment, I'm extremely concerned about the equal protection implications of permitting federal funds to support single-sex public schools. Are we on a slippery slope of justifiable discrimination?

Let's take a moment for a petty girl bitch: I've been trying very hard to grow out my fingernails. I've always had weak, fairly short and easily breakable nails. I've gone the acrylic route, the silk wrap thing, I've done it all. Finally, a combination of vitamins, Nail Envy, and Teflon Tuff seems to have done the trick. All of my nails were, until yesterday, relatively long, at least by my pitiful standards. But no, I had to go and try to turn on the lamp in our bedroom. Dumbass me managed to break the middle nail on my left hand right down to the quick. Like, to the point where it bled when I filed it down.
Dammit.

And in the famous "Hooters waitress thought she won a Toyota, but was given a toy Yoda instead" case, it seems that she's going to get her car after all. The waitress and the restaurant chain have reached a settlement in her pending breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation suit.
Isn't "fraudulent misrepresentation" an oxymoron?

Here's a cheery story to start your day. Woman and husband are accused of rape of a 14 year old girl, woman and husband attempt suicide with the help of husband's mom, husband dies, woman survives, mother-in-law charged with assisted suicide. One big, happy family.

When you're feeling sick and tired and generally upset with the world, it's a good idea to make yourself an appointment to get your hair done. My admin recommended a place to me, so tomorrow evening I'll be getting my hair cut, colored and highlighted. I might even get my nails done. Hold me back.

OK, full disclosure here: I am irrationally and deathly terrified of bridges over water; more specifically, I am absolutely paralyzed by fear that my car will plunge over the side of the bridge and that I will either suffocate or drown as a result of being unable to escape the car. I open my windows when I drive over bridges. Seriously.
This story, therefore, completely freaked me out.

Here's a lawsuit waiting to happen. (I know, where isn't there?) A California high school is refusing to let students graduate unless they commit to post-secondary education or training. This one raises all sorts of questions. What about work? What about those who can't afford post-seondary education, but don't want to enter the military? Is there a right for high school students to participate in graduation exercises?
I'm sure we'll be hearing from the ACLU shortly.

A plus-sized Jazzercise instructor in San Francisco has won her case before the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.
Jennifer Portnick applied last summer for a job as instructor for a low-impact workout class, but Jazzercise rejected her because she didn't have a lean physique. But at 5 feet 8 inches and 240 pounds, Portnick argued that she more closely mirrors the average American woman than do most aerobics instructors, and that her healthy lifestyle and fitness and dance skills should qualify her to lead a class.
Jazzercise, which sells aerobics-style dance classes, said Monday that it will drop its ``fit appearance'' criteria for instructors.

Too much stuff going on around here at the moment. The weekend was a blur of shopping and tidying and cleaning up the outside of the house, as the tenants are moving in on Friday or Saturday. I wasn't really thrilled about the dog thing initially, but now I'm thinking that having some puppies around won't be so bad. We collected a hefty security deposit from them, so I'm hoping that will all work out.
Work is good -- lots of little projects going on but nothing too insane. We're making an offer to another attorney this week, so that should help with the overflow workload, which will be nice. I finally got my dental work finished last night (see the cam shot there), and although my teeth feel really *big* right now, I'm thrilled with the results. They look so much better than before.
Other than that, same old, same old. We're kicking around some ideas for wedding plans, but nothing's concrete yet. I really need to order something for mom for Mother's Day, and to get a gift for the baby shower I'm attending this weekend. Speaking of which, send some good and happy thoughts Kerry's way, please. She's having a rough time with her pregnancy right now, and since she's such a kind and special person, I'm hoping that the collective force of good vibes sent her way will be somehow helpful.
Off to lunch.
