My Smiths anthem is... "How Soon Is Now?"
On the up side, you are the most famous Smiths song, ever. On the down side, you are neck deep in your own problems and have this little problem with experiencing happiness for more than five minutes at a time. You'd love to have love, but are not quite sure how one goes about getting it. You are probably growing cynical. You're one of millions, but may not realize this. Look around, it's not quite so lonely being lonely.
"How Soon Is Now?" is from Meat Is Murder or Best...1. |

Although we were awakened early by the painters next door, it's a good Saturday morning. The weather is absolutely gorgeous (as evidenced on the open-window cam over there, which the cats just love!) and we don't have a ton of house stuff to do today. I managed to clean up a lot of paperwork in my office already this morning, and I'm planning on tidying up the kitchen and bath later on. We're supposed to be going out to dinner with a friend of mine from AcronymCo and her husband. Of course, we'll be home in time for the late rerun of Trading Spaces and for the live broadcast of Disintegrator Radio.
I don't know whether you can really see it that well in the cam shot, but the house directly across the street from us is painted purple. Not lilac or lavender, but PURPLE. It's a little jarring upon first glance, but it's also a heck of a landmark to tell people how to get to our house. "Yeah, it's across the street from Barney's house."

One of the worst things that you can be doing at 5 o'clock on a sunny Friday afternoon: Waiting for a fax that is going to take most of your weekend's free time to review. This thing was supposed to be here around 3:30. Grrr. Argh.
05:05 PM EDT
They're screwing around with the web access here today, which means that about half the sites that I need to access for various reasons (for work purposes, at least) are giving me weird errors. I'm so glad that it's Friday, and I'm praying that nothing blows up between now and my approximate departure time of 5:30. Yesterday was a killer day, tons of arguments and running around, and I'm looking forward to the weekend, even though I do have some work to do over the weekend. The painters will be done tomorrow, hopefully, and then the new kitchen floor on the tenant side and the new storm doors for both sides will be installed. The house is slowly getting into shape, and we should be able to have more potential tenants through starting on Monday.

Can anyone confirm for me that James Marsters is, in fact, 39??? Yikes.

Today: Meetings-a-go-go. Tomorrow: More normalcy. Hopefully.

Well, never a dull moment -- it seems that I may be going back to DC in two weeks for another three-day seminar. This one's actually in Arlington, just minutes from where I used to live. Although I usually don't like to travel too much, and although I have Dallas next month and somewhere out west in May, I hope that I get to go to this one. I need some Hard Times chili, I think.

New favorite album of all time, for the time being, anyway: 69 Love Songs, by the Magnetic Fields. Holy Hannah, is this an amazing set of CDs. Love my boss for lending them to me, too.

Here's a question for you: how much does religion enter into your personal relationships, whether they be friendships, romantic relationships, or relationships with family? Although Dave and I were both raised Roman Catholic, with the accompanying umpteen years of Catholic school, neither of us is practicing right now. This causes his mother, who is extremely religious, no end of consternation. She calls to remind us to go to church on holy days, and still constantly asks Dave if he's gone to mass. It's gotten to the point now where ultimatums are being given based on where we (or where his brother and his fiancee, neither of whom are practicing Catholics, either) intend to get married, if in fact we (or they) choose to do so.
I find this kind of behavior appalling, frankly. I can't imagine not seeing my own child get married, simply because they don't choose to practice the same religion that I do. I'm starting to wonder what it's going to be like if and when we have kids, too -- when they go to grandma's, will it be OK that they're not Catholic, or will there be attempts to convert them, too?
It's making me fretful and annoyed. What I choose to believe, and how I choose to practice those beliefs, is my business and mine alone, and no amount of posturing on someone else's part is going to change that. Am I supposed to realize the error of my ways? To finally have the light bulb go off that Roman Catholicism is the one true religion? I don't know. And I really want to like Dave's mom. I do. But things like this just make it so hard.

Nothing could possibly be more scintillating than sifting through three separate, inch-thick Thomson and Thomson reports. Although it's mildly interesting to see what other trademarks and service marks are out there, overall, it's a rather boring exercise.

I'm watching this right now, and I'm just basking in its glory. Aside from the fact that Adam Pascal hits one stray note for every three that he hits, it's pretty wonderful. Joan Osborne did a lovely version of "Not While I'm Around," and I got to see the fantastic "Girl in the Yellow Dress" number from Contact, which is always a treat. Back to the tunes.

There are times when I forget how much I love Peter Gabriel. I'll go months and months without listening to him at all, and then I'll break out Shaking the Tree and hear "San Jacinto" and my insides start to melt and my hair stands on end. This guy is a genius. A genius!

I've joined the Pepys Project -- Mike Brown is collecting URLs for web logs, diaries, and journals from around the world, indexed by geographical area and then country. Head on over there and check it out!
