Held In Contempt

Well, we've had a busy home improvement day thus far. We had a painting contractor come over to give us an estimate on the tenant side, now that the (beautiful!) hardwood floors are done, and we were happy to find out that he could also replace the (hideous!) storm doors out front, as well as replacing the linoleum in the kitchen.

Why are we replacing the floors in the kitchen, you ask? Good question. It wasn't something that we had even considered doing, frankly.

However, that changed today, when we unexpectedly had a pair of potential tenants through the place. Granted, the realtor let us know that the woman of the couple was extremely fussy, but she expressed great disdain about the kitchen floor, mainly because it's a busy faux-wood vinyl tile that really doesn't match anything else in the kitchen, or in the rest of the house for that matter.

Anyway, when the painting contractor was here, he told us that if we wanted to go and buy vinyl tiles for the kitchen, he'd be able to quickly and cheaply install them, so we're off to get some. We're thinking basic and inoffensive -- in a word, beige.

Now I'm on Parts Direct trying to find two missing knobs for the microwave/oven combination over there, and not having much luck. They may have 90,000 different parts, but if I can't FIND one, it's not a big help to me.

We're going to Banzai Steakhouse today for lunch. I *love* hibachi. Woo! I also got a new company-provided Handspring Visor Pro today, which was a nice surprise. I used to have a Palm V, but I just need more memory! Too many applications! Too much stuff! And since that model is apparently now in the "Handheld Hall of Fame," the company has switched over to Handspring Visors. This one is a bit bulkier than the old one, but it also has 16MB of memory. Yay!

What a day. What a week. I'm just now eating dinner and watching Survivor. Tomorrow night we have another hockey game, and honestly I wish I could just come home and sleep. Work is good, but challenging, and home is wonderful, even though, as you can see, I have very little furniture in my office.

Yes, I got a webcam. Yes, my head is ENORMOUS.

Dear Whomever Put the Crazy in the Water Over the Last Two Weeks:

Please cut it the hell out.

I've got plenty of work to do without the sixteen degrees of wacky walking into my office or telephoning me every ten minutes. My desk and credenza (and floor, for that matter) are littered with folders and pieces of OurDrugName(R) notepaper with my scribbled notes. My Palm alarm is ringing almost constantly, as is the phone. My voicemail is intermittently full.

And my boss is out of the office today. At least he called in to respond to the urgent message I left for him this morning.

I don't mind being busy -- in fact, generally, I thrive on it, and on deadlines. The problem arises when there are so many things that literally need to be done immediately. We've brought an additional attorney on board three days a week as a consultant, but he's almost exclusively helping out with our development division -- an area for which I have very little functional responsibility. It's helping to reduce the workload of the department overall, but not mine specifically.

In the "fun" area, we scored some free tickets to the Devils-Rangers game at Madison Square Garden last night. Although we were late due to it taking me almost two hours to get from my office to Hoboken and over to midtown on the PATH, we still had a great time. Any game where Theo Fleury gets ejected gets a thumbs-up in my book. That guy is just the poster child for anger management counseling.

Work on the tenant side of the house is continuing apace. The electrical work is being completed, and the hardwood floors should be finished today as well. A little bit of paint and some general touch up work, and it will be ready to show to potential tenants.

Lloyd Dobler: I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

I did something last night that I haven't done unless I was ill in at least ten years.

I went to bed at 8:15 pm.

I got home from work at about 6:30, and cleaned up a little bit and made a salad for dinner, got into my pajamas, and sat down to surf a little bit on Bad Hair Days. By the time Dave started IMing me around 7:45, I couldn't even keep my eyes open. I thought about taking a nap, but doing that at 8 o'clock was just an invitation for doom today. So I went to bed, and I slept straight through to 7 this morning.

I feel SO MUCH BETTER now.

The Chilling Effects Clearinghouse is a website offering "background material and explanations of the law for people whose websites deal with topics such as Fan Fiction, Copyright, Domain Names and Trademarks, Anonymous Speech, and Defamation." It also is gathering a searchable database of Cease and Desist notices, which I've been browsing through this morning. Cool stuff!
